Lesson 1: Intro to Monoprinting - What skills & knowledge do we need to make a good print?

Last unit wrap up

1. Quietly sit boy/girl

2. Is your full name and tutor group neatly written on the back of your abstract painting?

3. Have you photographed your abstract painting and uploaded it to your Google Drive folder for the unit? (Your photos, design poster, abstract collage and final painting should be here)

Title your painting "Full Name-Tutor Group-Abstract Painting"

4. Have you placed your practice paintings and experiments in your sketchbook?

Warm-up 15mins: Remind students of all the drawing work of natural objects this year.

What was the focus of these drawing? What skills were we building?

Have students draw any natural object they wish from a photo, focusing on line techniques.

Task: Pencil Transfer Printing

It is possible to transfer this skill to monoprinting.

Teacher to demo.

Basically, ink your plexiglass with a very light layer of ink.

Place your paper on top of the plexiglass.

Begin drawing experimenting with different mark making and rubbing.

Note that any pressure you apply on your paper with your hand, will also leave marks.

When complete, peel your paper off the plexiglass and you will have a print!

After experimenting, begin a proper drawing on a new piece of paper.

Lesson 2: cont'd - How can we decorate our work with design elements?

Quietly organise yourself to sit alphabetically by last name.

Quietly open your sketchbook.

Warm-up:

You work for IKEA. Your manager wishes to create some new textile designs for new lines of products.

S/he is furious at what the team has come up with. Are you different than your team?

Now is the chance to get that promotion you dreamed of.

You are now in a design committee meeting. Your manager has given you only 10 minutes to create a composition that utilises a leaf.

You have the following choices:

1. create a textile pattern for a pillow catered to young children

2. create a textile pattern for a pillow cushion catered for adults

Can you incorporate any of the techniques into your work?

Try using dots, lines and patterns to decorate your work and/or do a Google image search for Zentangles for further ideas.

Formative Assessment Task: You will create a composition utilising line and decorative elements.

It is preferred if you depict natural objects.

Your print design does not have to be realistic. Think like a designer/illustrator etc.

Your goal is to fill the page by creating a balance between positive and negative space.

Take 15-20 minutes to draft out a design.

Then improve your drawing on the square piece of paper that will be handed to you.

This should be drawn lightly, so that when you print, you can simply draw/trace over your pencil drawing.

Here is an example. Could the design be improved in any way?

Homework: Watch the videos under next week's lesson. Get a picture for what you will draw. It may be easier if it is black and white.

Lesson 3: Abstract OR Reductive Monoprinting with Tones - How can we create tones and value?

At the teacher's discretion, you will do 1 of the 2 techniques below.

Print it 5x7 or half a page.
