UWCSEA Gr6 Art Unit 2-Losing Touch with Reality

Page history last edited by Frank Curkovic 8 years, 2 months ago

*these lessons may change at the discretion of the teacher, or may have to be adapted due to interruptions*

1 lesson will need to be added due to glazing ceramic pieces.

This unit concludes the week of March 21, 2016.

Lesson 1 - Pre-Assessment (What makes good design?)

Pre-assessment Task: Using Pages/Keynote/Illustrator, think like a designer to create a 1 page (or screen) advertisement for yourself.

What do you wish to highlight or advertise? Your ad should have a balance between image and word. You have 40 minutes!

When complete, do a gallery walk.

Take a screen shot of your work. Create a subfolder for unit 2 in your Google Drive Art folder. Share it with the teacher.

Rename your screen shot "Full Name-Tutor Group-U2 Pre" and drag it in this folder.

Look at the Rubric under Pre-assessment. How was your use of layout? text? colour?

Consider the reflection questions with a peer or small team.

Homework:

For this task, you will need a full page in your skecthbook. Title it "The Elements of Art."

Divide your page into 6 even squares. You will need to research the elements of art.

They are linecolourtexturevalueshape/form and space. Each term is linked to a video.

In each square, visually represent what each element means and add the element title.

Due the following week.

NOTE: please make sure your iPhoto or Photos is in working order for next class! If not, bring it to the IT Dept.

Lesson 2 - What makes a good composition? What are the elements of art? What are the principles of design?

Arrange seating for students.

Warm-up: What are the elements of Art? Review homework terms.

What makes a good photo composition? Discuss.

Watch the following video. (Pay attention as you will be taking pictures later in the lesson.)

Design Task Outline (Formative Assessment):

  • You are a professional photographer and graphic designer.
  • The Art Dept. at Dover needs your help in creating display materials for the art rooms.
  • You are required to create a poster using Pages (or Adobe Illustrator) on an element of art, which will be assigned to you and your partner. You and your partner can work together to take photos, but each of you are required to create your own poster.
  • Your poster will need text explaining the element in your own words, as well as photos of the element taken by you.
  • Having a variety of photos to illustrate your element of art is encouraged, as long as it does not hinder from your poster design (sometimes less is more).
  • To create your poster, you should consider and incorporate the principles of design. Carefully consider layout/space, font, colour etc.
  • You will have 30 minutes to take pictures.
  • Return to class. Partners should have the photos saved to each of their laptops. It is recommended you back them up in Google Drive.
  • This resource may prove useful as it provides some prompts.

After being assigned your element, you and your partner should search for some example images online to use as inspiration.

Homework:

Watch the following video (2min40sec).

Take simple notes on the elements mentioned (line, shape, contrast, colour, composition, rhythm, typeface, form, texture, space).

Bonus points if you organise your notes graphically!

This is an intro to design for creating your poster.

Begin creating your poster and be ready to critique it during the next lesson.

Lesson 3 - What is Abstract Art?

Arrange seating for students.

Warm-up: What are the principles of design?

Activity: Do a gallery walk of posters and then a critique.

(See homework section. Poster due next week)

Visual Analysis Task:

View the painting "Canna Red and Orange" by Georgia O'Keeffe (1922) in silence for 1 minute.

1. With a partner, describe what you see in great detail.

2. What do you think of the artwork?

3. What do you wonder about the artwork?

What elements or principles of art are evident in this work of art?

Summative Painting Challenge:

The Arts Dept. is holding an abstract art exhibit entitled "Losing Touch With Reality."

You will be required to create an abstract painting based on a photograph you have taken from the natural or man-made world.

Therefore, you may not use an image found online.

(*Photographing beach sunsets have been done to death and are not encouraged. They don't make interesting paintings.)

  • After taking a photograph, you may further crop and edit it.
  • If you wish, you may apply effects/filters to your photo using Photoshop, or another app.
  • You are using the photo as inspiration and do not necessarily have to directly replicate it.
  • Your painting will be approximately A4-A3 in size.
  • If you can, also look out for the principles/elements of art.
  • Remember to look for shape, colour, line, pattern etc.

You will be evaluated on:

  • your overall composition (framing, balance etc.) ***Don't forget to focus on principles/elements of art.
  • your use of colour (creating and mixing colour, tints/shades etc.)
  • your brushwork (coats of paint, hard-edge, blending, control of brush etc.)

Winning artworks will be put on display in the gallery. Good Luck!

  1. What is the task asking you to complete?
  2. Where can we find inspiration from? How can we abstract the world around us?
  3. (Here is a list of Abstract Art Painting Ideas)
  4. What makes a painting successful?
  5. What do you need to do to be successful?
  6. Review rubric.

Task: Abstracting Photos

Select 1-3 photos you have taken to manipulate.

Step 1: Watch the tutorial video below.

You will simply use filters. Watch a few steps, pause the video and then try yourself.

Save your photos. The video shows this at the 5min10sec mark.

Step 2 (Time permitting): Import your photos into iPhoto/Photos and try playing with the crop tool under Edit.

If you have not updated iPhoto yet, you will have to use an online photo editor, such as Fotor or Pixlr.

You may use another of your choice too.

Feel free to play with settings and editing features here as well.

Also try rotating your photo. You may get a more interesting composition!

Step 3: Do a gallery walk of your most interesting photo.

Step 4: Back up your photos to Google Drive. Create a sub-folder ("Photoshopped Photos") in your unit 4 folder.

Homework:

Refine and improve your poster assignment. It is due next week.

Save it as a PDF. Change the file name to "Full Name-Tutor Group-Poster." Back it up in your Google Art folder.

Bring it printed (full page) to class. Write your name and tutor group on the back.

Watch the following 6min30sec video if you want further info on graphic design.

Lesson 4 - Painting Collage

Arrange seating.

Collect poster designs.

Have students email the pdf to teacher. Ensure file names have been changed.

Task 1: You will be given an A3 sheet of paper and 3 analogous colours.

Analogous colours are colours next to each other on a colour wheel.

You need to colour your entire paper with these 3 colours.

Colours should be blended wet-on-wet. It is ok if they show texture, or you have some slight splattering.

When complete, move them onto the centre of your table to allow them to dry.

Task 2: Visual Analysis

Look at the following artwork by Rex Ray.

1. With a partner, describe what you see in great detail.

2. What do you think of the artwork?

3. What do you wonder about the artwork?

4. How do you think the artwork was created?

Task 3: Collaging your work

Your task for the remainder of the lesson is to create a work of art that uses the Esplanade in Singapore as inspiration.

You must also use the techniques of Rex Ray.

You painted an A3 page at the beginning of the class. Cut this in half.

One half is for you to use as the background of your work. The other half is for you to cut and trade pieces with other students in the room.

How can you use the Esplanade as inspiration? Consider size, repetition, scale, pattern, shapes, lines etc.

You do not have to recreate the photo, but can simply use certain elements to inspire you.

Conclusion:

Photograph and upload your work to your folder.Title it "Full name-Tutor group-u2-collage paint"

Homework:

Watch the following 7 minute video and answer the following questions:

What is abstract art? How can we understand a painting? What can we look for?

(These questions can be answered collectively)

Be prepared to share your answers in the next lesson.

Lesson 5 - Planning & Play

Warm-up (10-15mins):

Look at the following 2 works of art.

The first is by Kenneth Noland entitled "Beginning" (1958).

The second is by Beatriz Milhazes entitled "Populares" (2010).

1. With a partner, describe what you see in each work.

2. What do you think of the artwork(s)?

3. What do you wonder about the artwork(s)?

4. What are the similarities/differences?

5. What principles or elements were used in the works?

Task: Planning & Play

You will begin painting your final piece next week!

You will have 3 lessons to complete it.

What will you paint? How will you paint it? What elements/principles will be included? What colour scheme will be used?

Review rubric if required.

(*Note: painting like Jackson Pollock is not encouraged)

You may use today's lesson to develop your ideas and explore.

Have some ideas documented in your sketchbook.

Use your time wisely.
